What Is Technology Sector?
The Technology Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLK) is an exchange-traded fund that holds the technology-sector companies within the S&P 500, giving investors diversified exposure to that sector through a single tradeable security rather than having to buy each constituent stock individually. It's one of eleven Select Sector SPDR funds, each tracking a different GICS sector of the S&P 500.
Because a handful of the largest U.S. technology companies make up an outsized share of the S&P 500's technology sector by market capitalization, XLK tends to be heavily concentrated in its top few holdings, meaning its performance is often driven disproportionately by a small number of mega-cap constituents rather than spread evenly across the fund.
How Technology Sector Is Priced
Technology Sector is a market index, not a single tradable security — its value is a weighted average of the prices of the companies or assets it tracks, recalculated continuously as those underlying prices move. Investors can't buy the index directly; exposure typically comes through index funds, ETFs, or futures contracts designed to track it. Because it aggregates many holdings, an index's day-to-day move reflects the combined performance of its constituents rather than any single company's news.
