This page explains what personal information Imperialpedia collects when you use imperialpedia.com, why we collect it, and what you can ask us to do with it. We have tried to describe what the site actually does, not what a typical website might do. If something here is unclear, email us at [email protected].
You can read every article without creating an account or giving us any information. Like any web server, ours records basic technical details of each visit in its logs: your IP address, the browser and device you use, the page you asked for, and the time. We use these logs to keep the site running and to spot errors or abuse. We do not currently run an analytics service such as Google Analytics on the site.
Comments. If you comment on an article we ask for a name, an optional email address and your comment. The name and comment are shown publicly on the page. Your email address is not shown. Please do not put anything in a comment that you do not want strangers to read.
Newsletter. If you subscribe, we store your email address so we can send you the newsletter. You can ask us to remove it at any time.
Accounts. If you register, we store your name, your email address and a password. You can also sign in with your Google account, in which case Google shares your name and email address with us. We use this only to run your account.
Polls. When you vote in a poll, we store your vote together with a scrambled identifier made from your IP address and browser details. We use it only to stop the same person voting repeatedly. We do not store your raw IP address with the vote.
Job applications. If you apply on our Careers page, we collect your name, email, phone number, address, city, pincode, the role you chose and your CV as a PDF. This is sent to our team by email and stored on our server so that we can consider your application. Only send what you are comfortable sharing, and leave out anything you do not want us to hold, such as government ID numbers.
Emails and phone calls to us. If you write to or call us, we keep the message and your contact details for as long as we need them to reply and follow up.
We use two kinds of cookies ourselves. A session cookie remembers you between pages (for example, that you are signed in or that a message has been shown), and a security cookie protects our forms from forged submissions. Neither is used to track you across other websites.
You can block or delete cookies in your browser settings. If you do, sign-in and some forms may stop working.
We have applied to Google AdSense so that we can show advertising and cover the cost of running the site. Ads are not being shown yet. The AdSense code is already on our pages, so your browser may contact Google’s servers when you load a page.
When ads do start appearing, Google and its advertising partners may use cookies or similar technologies to show ads, including ads based on your earlier visits to this and other websites, and to measure how ads perform. We do not control those cookies and we do not receive your personal information from them. You can read how Google uses data at policies.google.com/technologies/ads, and you can turn off personalised ads in Google Ad Settings or at aboutads.info. We will update this page when advertising goes live.
To display pages we load fonts, icons and scripts from third-party providers such as Google Fonts, jsDelivr and cdnjs. These providers receive your IP address and browser details when your browser fetches those files. Our share buttons are ordinary links to X, Facebook and similar sites; nothing is sent to them unless you click.
We use your information only for the purposes described above: running the site, replying to you, sending a newsletter you asked for, handling job applications, and keeping the site safe. We do not sell your personal information. We share it only with the services that help us run the site (our web host, our email provider, and Google when you sign in with Google or when ads run), or when the law requires it.
We keep information only as long as it is useful for the reason we collected it. Comments stay until they are removed. Newsletter and account details stay until you ask us to delete them. Job applications are kept while we consider them and for a reasonable period afterwards in case a suitable role comes up; you can ask us to delete yours sooner.
We take reasonable steps to protect the information we hold, but no website or email system can be made completely secure, so we cannot guarantee it. Use a password for our site that you do not use anywhere else.
You can ask us to show you the personal information we hold about you, correct it, or delete it. You can also ask us to remove your email from the newsletter or delete your account or a comment. Email [email protected] from the address concerned and we will respond as soon as we reasonably can. If you are in India, the European Economic Area or the United Kingdom, you may have additional rights under the laws that apply to you, and we will honour them.
Imperialpedia is written for adults. It is not directed at children under 18, and we do not knowingly collect their personal information. If you believe a child has given us their details, tell us and we will delete them.
Articles sometimes link to other websites. We do not control them and are not responsible for their privacy practices. Check their policies before you share anything.
If we change how we handle information, for example when advertising starts, we will update this page and the date at the top.
