What Is USD/CNY?
USD/CNY is the exchange rate between the U.S. dollar and the Chinese yuan's onshore rate. Unlike most major currency pairs, the yuan does not float freely — the People's Bank of China sets a daily reference rate and permits the currency to trade only within a managed band around that midpoint, giving Chinese authorities significant influence over its day-to-day value.
This managed-float system makes USD/CNY move differently from freely floating pairs: shifts often reflect deliberate policy signals from the PBOC — for instance, allowing gradual depreciation to support export competitiveness, or intervening to defend the currency during periods of capital outflow — as much as pure market supply and demand.
How USD/CNY Is Priced
USD/CNY is a currency pair, and its "price" is an exchange rate — how much of the second currency it takes to buy one unit of the first. That rate floats based on relative supply and demand for each currency, driven by factors like interest-rate differentials between the two countries' central banks, trade flows, and broader risk sentiment. Forex trades continuously across a decentralized global network of banks and brokers rather than a single exchange, so the quoted price is an aggregate of interbank rates.
