About TSMC
Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) is the world's largest contract chipmaker and the single most important company in the global semiconductor supply chain — it manufactures the advanced chips designed by Nvidia, Apple, AMD, Qualcomm, and most other major chip companies that don't run their own factories. Founded in 1987 and headquartered in Hsinchu, Taiwan, TSMC pioneered the "pure-play foundry" model — manufacturing chips to other companies' designs rather than designing and selling its own — which has become the dominant structure for the entire industry outside of Intel and Samsung.
How Taiwan Semiconductor Market Cap Is Calculated
Taiwan Semiconductor's market capitalization is calculated by multiplying its total shares outstanding — the number of shares the company has actually issued to shareholders, as reported in its financial filings — by the current share price. It changes constantly as the share price moves, and also shifts whenever the company issues new shares, buys back existing ones, or splits its stock. Market cap is a market-value measure, not a statement of the company's assets or revenue: two companies with identical market caps can have very different underlying financials.
