What Is Sensex?
The S&P BSE Sensex tracks 30 large, financially established companies listed on the Bombay Stock Exchange — India's oldest stock exchange — and is India's most widely followed equity benchmark, first published in 1986 with a base value of 100 (base year 1978-79).
Constituents are selected for market capitalization, liquidity, and revenue diversification across sectors, and the index skews toward financial services, information technology, and energy companies. As India's economy has grown, the Sensex has increasingly been watched by global investors as a proxy for emerging-market growth exposure, alongside China-focused benchmarks like the Shanghai Composite and Hang Seng.
How Sensex Is Priced
Sensex is a market index, not a single tradable security — its value is a weighted average of the prices of the companies or assets it tracks, recalculated continuously as those underlying prices move. Investors can't buy the index directly; exposure typically comes through index funds, ETFs, or futures contracts designed to track it. Because it aggregates many holdings, an index's day-to-day move reflects the combined performance of its constituents rather than any single company's news.
