About Microsoft
Microsoft is one of the two or three companies that most directly define how the AI era gets built and sold to businesses, combining a dominant enterprise software franchise (Windows, Office, and now Microsoft 365 Copilot) with Azure, one of the world's largest cloud computing platforms, and a deep commercial partnership with OpenAI. Founded in 1975 and headquartered in Redmond, Washington, Microsoft's modern strategy under CEO Satya Nadella has been to embed AI into essentially every product line it sells rather than treat it as a separate business, and its recent results suggest that strategy is working at scale.
How Microsoft Market Cap Is Calculated
Microsoft's market capitalization is calculated by multiplying its total shares outstanding — the number of shares the company has actually issued to shareholders, as reported in its financial filings — by the current share price. It changes constantly as the share price moves, and also shifts whenever the company issues new shares, buys back existing ones, or splits its stock. Market cap is a market-value measure, not a statement of the company's assets or revenue: two companies with identical market caps can have very different underlying financials.
