About Meta
Meta Platforms is the parent company of Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Messenger, and remains, at its core, the largest advertising business built on social media — even as it pours tens of billions of dollars a year into artificial intelligence and its longer-running, still-unprofitable bet on the metaverse through its Reality Labs division. Founded in 2004 as Facebook and renamed Meta in 2021, the Menlo Park, California company generates the overwhelming majority of its revenue and all of its profit from advertising across its "Family of Apps," with Reality Labs functioning as a separately reported, heavily loss-making research-and-hardware arm.
How Meta Market Cap Is Calculated
Meta's market capitalization is calculated by multiplying its total shares outstanding — the number of shares the company has actually issued to shareholders, as reported in its financial filings — by the current share price. It changes constantly as the share price moves, and also shifts whenever the company issues new shares, buys back existing ones, or splits its stock. Market cap is a market-value measure, not a statement of the company's assets or revenue: two companies with identical market caps can have very different underlying financials.
