What Is Hang Seng?
The Hang Seng Index tracks the largest and most liquid companies listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange and is the primary benchmark for Hong Kong equities, first published in 1969 by Hang Seng Bank.
Because a significant number of major mainland Chinese companies are dual-listed or primarily listed in Hong Kong, the Hang Seng functions as an important gauge of investor sentiment toward Chinese equities more broadly, not just Hong Kong's own economy — foreign investors facing restrictions on direct mainland market access often use Hong Kong-listed shares as their primary access point to Chinese corporate exposure.
How Hang Seng Is Priced
Hang Seng is a market index, not a single tradable security — its value is a weighted average of the prices of the companies or assets it tracks, recalculated continuously as those underlying prices move. Investors can't buy the index directly; exposure typically comes through index funds, ETFs, or futures contracts designed to track it. Because it aggregates many holdings, an index's day-to-day move reflects the combined performance of its constituents rather than any single company's news.
